The Sarugami Clan (猿神一族, Sarugami Ichizoku) are a mysterious clan of humans and monkeys who live together in harmony upon the just as mysterious Monkey Island. It is said that if someone from outside the clan proves themselves to be the protector of monkey island and the leader of the clan Lord Sarugami then one may be granted the right to adopt the surname Sarugami and be recognised as an official member of the clan. The Sarugami is a cousin clan of the Sarutobi and the two have a close relationship. The Sarutobi just choose to reside outside of Monkey Island and don’t follow the same beliefs and traditions the Sarugami do.
History[]
The history of the mysterious Sarugami isn’t well-known outside the Island and all who have tried to spread anything about the Sarugami without permission seem to all wind up dead.
In the distant past, humans migrated from the mainland to a small island off the coast of what used to be the Land of Fire. The island was mysterious and surrounded in a thick, heavy fog that obscured one's vision. Even with such an ominous fog surrounding the lands the people still chose to set foot upon the island and once they stepped through the fog they were greeted by the sight of beautiful sprawling forests, large, majestic mountains and clear and serene rivers and lakes. It was like a jungle paradise.
Once they begun to move inland they didn’t have long as they were quickly set upon by the residents, apes and monkeys of various sizes ranging from the size of a child to one that rivals Tailed Beast in sheer size. They would have been torn to shreds if not for the timely intervention of Lord Sarugami, The Monkey God. While Sarugami like the rest of the monkeys and apes on the island dislikes the presence of humans, he isn’t beyond giving them a chance because of this he was able to speak with the leader of the humans. The Monkey God and the man got along so well that Sarugami invited them to stay but only if they could prove themselves worthy and hence the tradition of proving your worth to the monkeys was born.
These humans would be the direct ancestors of the current Sarugami Clan having taken Lord Sarugami’s name in honor of their new deity. It is said that he shared his power with them and in turn, it granted all members a strong life force allowing them to live well over 100 years but none have ever seemed to live past 200 years, excluding the monkeys and those who also descend for other groups with long lifespans.
Customs & Traditions[]
Summoning Monkeys - Those not born on the Island are not partnered with a monkey at birth and therefore must fulfill certain conditions if they hope to be granted the privilege to summon a monkey. The condition to summon a monkey is to defeat said monkey in single combat or if you are lucky survive a loss and be proven worthy by said monkey. The only others exempt from this are the Sarutobi as they form their own contracts through their own way.
Monkey Names - All members born into the Sarugami tend to have names that in some way reference Monkeys. (Yamazaru, Sarugami, Sarutora etc) Those who join the clan but are not born into it will be granted a new name for use by the monkeys and within Monkey Island these are chosen by high-ranking members such as Sarugami & Sarutora. Some may be nice and honor you and some may be to make fun of you. It all depends on the impression you left.
Monkey Worship - Monkey Worship is the religion of those who live and train on the island and all members of the Sarugami Clan.
Monkey Sage Mode - The requirement for learning Monkey Sage Mode is to be chosen and deemed worthy by the Monkey God himself. If Lord Sarugami doesn’t deem you worthy then you will be rejected.
Entrance to the Island - To even step foot on Monkey Island one must be accompanied by some one who is already welcome. Those who enter without permission will be seen as a hostile and will be set upon by all the residents and will most likely loose their life.
Unique Traits[]
The Sarugami Clan, unlike many others aren't blessed with some marvelous blessing like the Uchiha Clan's Sharingan, the Hyuga Clan's Byakugan or even the Yuki Clan's Ice Release. Instead they are possess monkey like traits that manifest in varies ways. For some it may be something as useless extra hair growing upon the tops of their hands and feet, but for some it can manifest as prehensile feet or even a prehensile monkey tail.
